Welsh Rugby Union bosses are set to launch legal action against squatters who have moved into a city centre building owned by the WRU.
The group, part of the Occupy Cardiff movement, have claimed squatters rights and vowed to remain in the old Inland Revenue building on Westgate Street “indefinitely”. They say they want to turn it into a media centre for their protest movement.
Millennium Stadium general manager Gerry Toms, however, said the occupation was “unlawful” and that WRU solicitors had been instructed to start legal proceedings.
“We have spoken to the police. They have to take into account the legal peculiarities and they have advised us that we should seek legal redress,” said Mr Toms.
“Our view is that the property belongs to us and we feel that their occupation is unlawful. We will be seeking redress through the civil courts.”
South Wales Police confirmed the dispute was a civil matter.
The building has been empty since it was last used by an Army cadet unit in April.
The occupation began a week ago, but the group only made their occupation known on Saturday afternoon when they unveiled large banners at the front of the building.
WalesOnline was yesterday allowed into the building, but the squatters refused to be named or allow photographs.
Inside, the walls had been graffiti ed with “artwork”, while tables, chairs and concrete slabs were being used to barricade doors.
Mr Toms, a former South Wales Police chief superintendent, said a window at the rear of the property, had been “forced” open.
But an Occupy Cardiff spokeswoman said they had gained “legal” access to the building through a window which was already “buckled”.
She said: “What we don’t want to do is anything that breaks the law. The one thing that we are not is criminals.”
The spokeswoman, who said she was a musician, said the occupants ranged in age from 18 to 55 and included a mix of students and professionals.
She said the group hoped to turn the building into a “multi-media headquarters for the Occupy Movement”, offering poetry workshops, and boasts an “artist in residence”.
“It’s a fantastic and huge space. It’s about using resources fairly. The whole issue is that the management of resources at the moment is distorted by capitalism,” she said.

I for one can't help feeling that the bad publicity and media aren't exactly getting behind these average people, in fact .....some protesters feel there may be something far more sinister going on. With every efforts of the police and officials to silence and minimise the speech and voices of the people! Who began this in a most peaceful and respective manner! are now in fear of persecution to the extent that even passer's are starting to feel intimidated and afraid . afraid of what you may ask?  It seems that everyone is afraid of breaking the law its self  with so many bylaws and ways of infringement it seems that any single one of us may end up with a criminal record with such shady guidelines in today's society when it comes to the matter of the law ...... even the law officers themselves seem to be getting caught up in the mish mash of what is right and wrong" as The occupy Cardiff story unfolds.... this latest attempt by the police to limit public rights in such a manner totally bugger's belief and am praying that the situation will be seen with fresh eyes in public opinion as more innocent people face being criminalised for simply speaking out or witnessing freedom of speech!!!

I am deeply saddened by this footage that was sent to me by a passer by who was in fear of the repercussions of standing up for himself and his personal property!
Further more, not only is there a lack of justice and sympathy on the streets for the protesters, it seems following the court proceedings of which i hoped would have been dropped on the basis these people are not gypsies or traveller's! I also learnt that another date has been set for proceedings to go ahead with combination charges!!! as a public person tries to rally their heads around all this my sympathies go out to the protesters as all odds deemed to be stacked against them!

wales online reported.....

Two Occupy Cardiff protesters appeared in court yesterday charged over a short-lived demonstration camp outside Cardiff Castle earlier this month.

The pair are charged with failing to comply with an order made under Section 61 of The Criminal Justice and Public Order Act, 1994.
Jason Lee Mark Simons, 37, and Erik Kinks, 17, who waived his anonymity, both pleaded not guilty.
They were ordered to appear in court again on February 8 for a full trial.
As part of his bail conditions, Simons is not allowed within the grounds of the castle. The pair were joined in court by around 30 fellow protesters.

One thing i have always been proud of is the outspoken openness of the welsh people! I find it barbaric in today's society to suppress and silence the voices of a proud people and am ashamed that this is being allowed to go on so openly! get behind these protesters i urge the common man! so that we as a community do not lose our voice!

i stand by my post of the Julius Caesar decade of Cardiff! the evidence is transparent!
